The Call I'll Remember for a While
In mid-March 2024, at about 1:20 on a Thursday, a general contractor I'd worked with for years called me. He was standing in the courtyard of a 42-room boutique hotel in Charleston. The soft opening was set for Sunday. The electrical crew had just opened the lighting boxes and stopped working.

If you've never had to answer this question under a deadline, here's the short version: an LED driver is the power supply that makes an LED lamp work. Household power comes in as 120V AC. An LED chip runs on low-voltage DC — typically in a range of 10 to 36 volts depending on the fixture — and it needs a controlled, steady current. The driver converts that AC power into the right DC output and keeps the current constant so the LED doesn't flicker, drift, or burn itself out early.
That last part is important. The driver isn't just a plug adapter. It's actively regulating the power flow. LEDs are current-driven devices, not voltage-driven ones. Feed one too much current and it gets hot, shifts color, and dies way before its rated life. Feed it too little and it's dim and unhappy. A driver is what keeps things in the zone.
Some LED fixtures come with the driver built into the housing. A lot of Kichler fixtures do, and you never think twice about it. But some — especially architectural accent and spotlight lines — are designed to work with a separate constant-current driver. The spot lights on this project were in that second category. The spec sheet said it, in plain text: "Driver required, sold separately."
I had read that spec sheet at least three times across the project's life. I'd flipped past that line every single time. A five-minute check would have caught it. Instead, I got a 48-hour lecture on why the driver matters.
The Problem with "It's Pretty Standard"
Here's the thing about LED drivers: you can't just substitute any driver that looks close. The fixture specification lists the exact requirements — input voltage, output current, wattage range. In that order. Get the current wrong, and the light may turn on but fail within a few hundred hours. Get the input voltage wrong and you get flicker from day one.
The spot lights needed a constant-current driver rated at 350mA, 25 watts, with 120V AC input. That's a specific thing. Not "a driver that can probably handle it." A specific driver. And "UL listed" doesn't mean "compatible" — it just means the driver is safe to use. The fixture's requirements decide what's compatible.
Honestly, I'm not sure why some manufacturers make the driver separate while others embed it. My best guess is that separate drivers are easier to service when they fail and allow for smaller fixture housings. But whatever the engineering reason, it's never obvious from the product photo. You have to check the data sheet. And that's the kind of thing that's sort of easy to forget when the project is moving and the deadline is real.
The conventional wisdom says LED fixtures are self-contained — that you order them, hang them, and they work. In practice, for exterior architectural fixtures, it's more of a coin toss. Some are plug-and-play. Some are two-piece puzzles. The only way to know which one you're dealing with is to read the fine print.
The 48-Hour Scramble
The distributor in Charlotte had the right drivers in stock. Good. They were about $22 each. The bad news: normal ground shipping was four days, and we needed them by Saturday morning.
So we paid $60 in rush freight. Eight drivers, $176 total. The freight alone cost more than the components. And that's not counting the electrician's extra labor for a Saturday delivery, the rescheduling, and the three hours I spent on the phone verifying specs and tracking the shipment. By the time I added it all up, that oversight cost the project roughly $580. Not a fortune, but a solid chunk of margin that vanished because I skipped one line in a PDF.
While the freight truck did its thing, the crew kept moving where they could. They mounted all six Royal Marine wall lights. They ran the low-voltage cable for the transformer and the photocell. What I'd Do Differently (and What I'd Tell You)
It took me three years and about twenty lighting projects to understand that the driver is the component everyone treats as an afterthought. It's not in the product photos. It's not in the pretty renderings. But it's the difference between a smooth install and a Saturday-morning emergency.
Now I keep a short checklist for every LED fixture I specify:
- Does the spec say "driver included" or "driver required"?
- If required, which driver model, current, and input voltage?
- Is the driver compatible with the dimmer or control system on this job?
That last one is another trap, but that's a story for another day. The point is: five minutes of checking beats 48 hours of scrambling. Every time.
