Seven years ago, I did not trust checklists. I trusted the bid sheet, the product photo, and my own memory. Then I ordered a Kichler chandelier in the wrong finish and ate a $3,200 mistake. That was 2017. Since then, I have made and documented enough lighting errors to pay for someone's kitchen remodel. This is the checklist I now use before every Kichler chandelier specification and every recessed lighting layout. It has seven checks. The industry has changed since 2020—LED drivers, smart dimmers, and finish technologies have made some old best practices obsolete—but the fundamentals have not changed: measure it, verify it, and control it separately.

Step 1: Read the model number like a spec, not a style
Take the Kichler Lighting Titus 8 Light Chandelier 43715PN. The suffix tells you the finish. PN is Polished Nickel. The Kichler Lighting 4-Light Chandelier 43347CLP has a different suffix, and CLP is Classic Pewter. I know that now because I once approved a CLP fixture thinking the photo looked like warm bronze. It did not. The actual finish was cooler, grayer, and completely wrong for the space. The photo looked right, the code was right, and I skipped the physical sample because of a deadline. That was the overconfidence trap. I still kick myself for trusting the render.
I only believed in checking finish codes after ignoring them once. Now, before any fancy chandelier goes into a submittal, I write the full model number and ask the local rep to confirm the finish tag. It takes five minutes, and it is fairly painless. It has saved me more than once.
Step 2: Measure the drop with the ceiling, not the floor
Chandeliers get installed on ceilings, but people bump into them with heads, doors, and ladders. For an 8-foot ceiling, I keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet above the floor. Over a dining table, 30 to 36 inches from the tabletop to the bottom is my typical range—but that is a starting point, not a law.
A Titus 8 Light Chandelier has visual mass. Its overall height and adjustable stem length matter more than the photo suggests. On a 12-foot commercial ceiling, you may need extra cable. On an 8-foot residential ceiling, you may need to remove links. The mistake I made was assuming the fixture would hang at the same height as it did in the catalog rendering. I hung a chandelier so low that a fire door clipped it every time it opened. The client was polite. The schedule was not.
Step 3: Treat dimmer compatibility as a verification step, not a feature
This is where the industry really changed. The Kichler Lighting 4-Light Chandelier 43347CLP now uses integrated LED boards in many configurations. You are not swapping a bulb. You are working with a driver that has its own dimming requirements.
I learned this in 2022 when a chandelier hummed on a standard dimmer. I knew I should check the driver specification, but I thought, What are the odds? The odds caught up with me. Since then, I get the exact dimmer model into the electrical submittal and cross-check it against the fixture spec. I do not tell clients that any dimmer will work. I tell them which dimmer was tested.

Step 4: Put recessed lighting where the kitchen is, not where the grid tells you

For an 8-foot kitchen ceiling, a 4-inch LED downlight with a 40-degree beam casts a pool of light roughly 2.5 feet wide—or rather, it does on the fixtures we tested; always check the photometric curve. If you space the cans about 4 feet apart, you get good overlap without turning the ceiling into a grid. Keep them about 2 feet away from the upper cabinets so light hits the counterfront, not the cabinet doors. And if the chandelier is meant to be the focal point, keep the nearest recessed light at least 3 feet away from it—probably more if the downlight is a wide flood.
That said, the IES Lighting Handbook is a better authority than my rule of thumb. Use it for beam angles, spacing ratios, and task plane recommendations. The old habit of laying out recessed lights symmetrically around the room is exactly backward. Place them around tasks: the sink, the prep zone, the island edge. If you do that, the fancy chandelier can be the final layer, not the only layer.
Step 5: Give the chandelier its own switch and control zone
I made this mistake in 2024. We had a Kichler chandelier, recessed downlights, and under-cabinet linear lighting all on one circuit. The only way to lower the chandelier was to lower everything. The client was diplomatic, but I knew it was wrong.
At minimum, separate decorative lighting from general lighting. For kitchens, I use three zones: task downlights, accent or under-cabinet lighting, and the chandelier. You can combine them later on a switch if you want, but you cannot split a shared circuit without opening walls.
Step 6: Use a Volt spotlight to give the chandelier context
When a client says they want a fancy chandelier, they usually mean they want the room to feel intentional. That is a lighting design problem, not a product price problem. A chandelier can be the jewel, but it needs contrast to shine.
On a 2023 job, the chandelier looked nice by itself. Then we aimed a low-voltage Volt spotlight at a textured plaster wall, and the entire room felt different. The surprise was not the lighting change; it was how much context mattered. The chandelier became the hero of a composition instead of a light hanging in the middle of a flat room. At least, that has been my experience in rooms with white or lightly textured walls.
Use accent lighting to define a dark wall, a piece of art, or a material texture. It does not need to be a big fixture. A small accent beam is often enough.
Step 7: Document the fixture, driver, and dimmer for someone you will never meet
Integrated LED has changed the maintenance conversation. Five years ago, the fix was replace the bulb. Now the fix is often replace the driver or LED module. If no one on-site knows which driver is in the ceiling, the maintenance team will start guessing.
After a panicked call about a flickering Titus 8 Light Chandelier, I started leaving a one-page sheet in the electrical panel: model number, finish suffix, driver part number, dimmer model, and the photometric data source. It feels overly formal for a chandelier, but it has saved the people who came after me.
Mistakes that still show up in submittals
The list below is not exhaustive, but it is the short list I flag first:
- Ordering from a screen render without a physical finish sample.
- Assuming every LED fixture is dimmable, or that every dimmer works.
- Laying out recessed lights symmetrically around the room instead of around the tasks.
- Hanging a chandelier at eye level in a walkway.
- Forgetting to verify the suffix code on the Kichler spec sheet.
Technical note on finish matching
If a paint color or trim finish has to coordinate with a Kichler fixture finish, do not rely on a monitor. Pantone's Color Matching System uses Delta E; a Delta E under 2 is the target for color-critical work, and a phone photo usually cannot get you there. The industry will keep evolving. Some of what I learned in my first year is now obsolete, and that is a good thing. But the basics—verify the model code, measure the drop, separate the switches, and document what you installed—are not going anywhere. They are just easier to skip, and the cost of skipping them is higher than ever.
