The alabaster chandelier caught my eye first. Warm white stone, clean lines, the kind of fixture that makes a reception area feel intentional instead of decorated. I had the quote open on my screen and the company credit card in my hand.
Then I paused. Something about the spec sheet gave me a feeling I couldn't name.
I'm an office administrator, not a lighting designer. I manage purchasing for a mid-sized company—roughly $200,000 a year across vendors, from office supplies to furniture. When our main-floor renovation landed on my desk, I became a lighting buyer overnight. Three products. Three technical ecosystems. I understood none of them on day one.
The landscape lighting was the biggest surprise. Low-voltage fixtures need a transformer, sized to the total wattage of every light on that run. The cable gauge matters. The distance from the transformer matters. And then there's the design side—the actual spotlight arts of choosing beam angles and positioning fixtures to make a building look like something at night. It's a discipline.
But here's what surprised me most as a non-technical buyer: none of this was secret. All of it was documented.
The question was whether the manufacturer would share the documentation.
What Ignorance Actually Costs
When I compared two quotes for the same set of Kichler landscape spot lights, the price difference was hard to ignore. One distributor came in about $400 cheaper. Same fixture, same finish, same model number.
The catch was the transformer. The cheaper quote specified an indoor-rated transformer for an exterior installation. It wasn't a discount. It was a future service call wearing a disguise.
I still kick myself for almost accepting it. If I had, the transformer would have sat exposed to weather it wasn't rated for. The housing would have oxidized within the first season. What changed my approach wasn't a lighting course. It was a side-by-side comparison of documentation. The other brand published a PDF that said “use LED-compatible dimmers” and left it at that.
Seeing that contrast made me realize: the product wasn't the fixture. The product was the information.
I'm not an electrician, and I don't pretend to be. But learning this shifted how I buy everything that plugs into a system:
- Start with the spec sheet, not the photo. If a manufacturer doesn't document driver specs, dimming compatibility, and lamp replacement parts, move on. Documentation is a filter.
- Buy as a system. For landscape lighting, choose the transformer, photocell, cable, and fixtures from the same ecosystem. Mixing components is where “it mostly works until it doesn't” begins.
- When someone asks how to wire a dimmable LED driver, the short version is: match the driver input to your supply, match the driver output to the total LED wattage, and match the dimming leads to your dimmer's protocol. The full version is in the manufacturer's installation sheet. Read it before you schedule the electrician, not after.
- Order lamps by SKU, not by description. When I ordered the Kichler 18139 LED lamps for our sconces, I verified they were compatible with the existing drivers and dimmers. A lamp that “looks right” can still be electrically wrong.
- Treat vague answers from reps as a red flag. If they can't tell you what driver is in the fixture, you're one purchase order away from a service call. (Note to self: this is now my standard vendor filter.)
The chandelier we eventually installed has alabaster shades and clean, architectural lines. It works with the building's dimmers. Its lamp replacement part numbers are filed under “maintenance” in my cabinet. It was the right call.
And I'd never have gotten there if I'd kept staring at the photo.
