Why Your Lighting Project Is Over Budget Before It Ships

In 2023, I ordered a chandelier for our new conference room. Nothing fancy—a brushed nickel piece with LED arms. It sat in its shipping crate for two weeks—or rather, fourteen days of increasingly panicked emails—because the driver wasn't compatible with the dimmers on our wall controls.

But they're exactly the details that decide whether your new fixture works on day one.

The LED Lamp That Taught Me to Read Specs

About a year after the chandelier debacle, facilities asked me to source replacement LED lamps for a row of track heads in the lobby. You Don't Have to Become a Lighting Engineer

If you're an office administrator, a facilities manager, or a contractor who's been burned by a lighting project, here's the honest takeaway: you're not bad at your job. The problem is that a lighting fixture is a system, and most vendors don't hand you the system specs until after you've ordered the pretty picture.

The fix isn't to go back to school. It's to demand better documentation before you spend.

Buy from brands that treat the transformer, the photocell, the driver, and the fixture as one integrated package. Ask for the photometric data, the dimming compatibility list, and the line-loss calculation. If a vendor can't provide those—find one who can.

That's been my experience with mid-sized commercial projects, at least. Since I changed the process in mid-2024, I haven't had a single lighting callback. We spend more time upfront reviewing spec sheets, but we've saved far more in restocking fees and emergency electrician visits. And when the next chandelier arrives, I'll know exactly what's inside the crate—and whether it'll work the day the installer walks in.
